Fire Extinguisher Training

Have you ever wanted or needed to know how to use a fire extinguisher. Durango Fire now has the opportunity to present classes through out our community. Our new training simulator is a safe, clean propane burning system. Classes can be set up for community members to learn how to safely and appropriately select the proper extinguisher and to use a fire extinguisher. Program consists of classroom time and practical hands-on-training with live fire.

Fired Up Stories

Durango Fire and Rescue has teamed up with the Durango Public Library to deliver a reading program to the children of our community. 'Fired up Stories' occurs on ther second Friday of every month in the childrens' area of the library. Firefighters and Medics from our community read stories and bring in firefighting equipment for demonstrations. Our target audience is the pre-school age but all are welcome! Event starts at 10:30am on the second Friday of every month.

Classroom Education

Education sessions for any fire or life safety message can be delivered to classrooms in our community in all our public and private schools. Age and grade level appropriate lessons are available. Lessons can include basic fire safety, fire escape plans, electrical safety, injury prevention, bike/pedestrian safety.

The fire safety house is available to grades two and three, with a minimal of two classes signing up.

Juvenile Firesetter Intervention

The intervention program is to accommodate juveniles that have been involved in firesetting. This class is designed to educate the dangers of firesetting and to prevent further incidents from occurring. Juveniles go through assessments and classes with trained Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Specialists. This program works closely with the county judicial system and LaPlata County Youth Services.

Safety House

The safety house is present at most DFRA Community functions. In the safety house, students learn the important task of creating a fire escape plan at home. Students then practice a fire drill with simulated smoke, teaching students to crawl low under smoke and to utilize more than one way out of the structure. The Safety House is available to teachers upon request for grades 2 and 3. A minimal of two classes must sign up.

Station Tours

Tours can be arranged at any of DFRA’s 16 stations. Apparatus can also be arranged to come to your location or facility. Station and Engine tours are always pending on the availability of crews. Please remember that 911 emergencies take precedence over tours. Engine tours are available to come to your school or facility. Engine tours are not available at private residences.

Campus 101

Designed for Fire and Life Safety education at the college level. Available for all student groups upon requests, great for dorm residents. Class will consist of fire safety education for students living on their own, escape/evacuation tips, cooking and electrical safety.
